well as far as my experience goes the Hybrid Dedicated VPS is the only qualifying alternative to a dedicated server. Cheap VPS are just toys.

My biggest question is the performance. When I look at Cisco ASA Firewalls or the former Cisco VPN Concentrator, performance can be an issue. Only by offloading encryption capabilities to a dedicated processor the encryption doesn't suffer delays.

I bought hosting from lacehost.com and faced same issues. I guess maybe its because they are low end sellers, and offers services at too cheap prices. I guess I should have sticked with the bests in the business only.

I have also seen similar issues, apart fro the fact that I am not a techie and is easy to deceive. Quite often, I have seen my sites down, and whenever I ask about those to the support division, they just keep saying that I am using too much of the memory and I should upgrade to a better plan. And even if I do so, things keep on happening and I am asked to upgrade, once more. I at last gt a dedicated server and my problems were fixed to a lot extent. You should try that too.

Same here.. I was a little late to patch my server and the virus got there before I even opened my server.. Now VPS is a great stuff if the memory is higher than 1GB and the processor over 1GHz. It's a common tactic to entice you with 256MB memory first and then get you upgraded later. So why my story about the virus hit.. You see if i was running on VPS I could've taken a snapshot of that running instance and then restore it later to reduce downtime. That's the awesome part of virtualization.. Any similar thoughts?

Last year, I purchased a VPS plan from Wiredtree.com. To make a long story short, I ran into the similar problems as you did regarding resource allocation though. My situation though, was slighly different...

I deduced that the Virtuozzo containers which split up the WHM hosting control panel and virtual hosts did not allocate enough CPU resources per instance. This result in very slow performance and moderately CPU intensive PHP operations and MySQL queries.

What DID solve my problem was upgrading to their Hybrid Dedicated VPS plan (I'm paying $111/month). While that may sound like a lot, what I get is 2GB RAM, an ENTIRE DEDICATED CPU CORE and enough HD space. Basically, it is as though I have my own dedicated server. I manage several other dedicated linux server and the performance under normal-to-medium load conditions is equivalent.

Here's an example:

I could not even *start* Alfresco on the regular VPS.

On the Hybrid Dedicated, it started and ran just fine.

My conclusion is that really cheap VPS are just toys. The Hybrid Dedicated VPS from the company I mentioned above is the only qualifying alternative to a dedicated server.

I agree, the text is great but after reading it I have kind of a headache. I had to ctrl-a all the text, but even then it becomes black on dirty-gray background and it's still hard to read.

I used VPS only once and it's such a nightmare... Only dedicated servers allow you forget about little and not-so-little technical problems of web hosting, but they cost $$$ :(

Not really. The VPS has its own copies of all the services, and they can be reconfigured independently of other VPS on the same server.

informative post but please change the font color as its not too bright thus reading it on black background is quite difficult

FREEBSD Jails would have been a better option, imho. The Jails can give you your own isolated root environment, while memory on the host is shared between the Jails. "This system does not prevent a jailed process from monopolizing the CPU when there are no other runnable processes; rather, it only prevents a jail from using more CPU time than its share if there are other jailed processes (in which case they will tend to share CPU time in proportion to their respective CPU share allocations)."

Think of it as a mean between shared and VPS hosting.

Not really. The VPS has its own copies of all the services, and they can be reconfigured independently of other VPS on the same server. Only the basic operating system is in common. There is greater (though not complete by any means) independence from other users on the same server. Different management software (usually Virtuozzo) is used that is not present in shared hosting, and influences the environment.

Wish I read this article the first time I went into buying a VPS. It cost me alot of my patience.
