Thoughts for PHP gurus: magazinecity.com a fraud?

  • Terry · 12 months ago
I placed an order for Performance Bikes as a birthday present for my husband. Order was placed on 9/26. On 12/8 I sent an email via the magazinecity customer service checking the status. I never received a response despite the fact that their website says they will respond to ALL emails with 8 - 10 days. on 12/20 I sent another email inquiry, no response. On 12/23 I called, customer service rep LIED to me and told me we were still within the 10 - 12 week order processing period and we would receive the magazines shortly. I called today 12/29 and was told that on 12/23 I was told we would receive the magazines end of 1/09 or 2/09. I was never told that. 4 - 5 months to start a magazine subscription is ridiculous. This company is a fraud.

they are keeping a low profile, respecting some orders from now and then
but yes, i have to agree with you, 99% they are a fraud
  • Bali Accommodation · 10 months ago
I am just curious, if you know a site is 99% fraud, then why deal with them? Why even bother to browse the site?

But another question, if we encounter sites like these, what do we have to do?

Since I wrote the original item, I'm pleased to say that the problem was eventually resolved for me. The credit card company wouldn't help me because they said the issue had gone outside the six month limit - on account of all the delaying tactics. But an American friend suggested to me that I could contact the Better Business Bureau at http://bbb.org and register a complaint with them. The company responded within the deadline given and offered a refund, which was then processed within 48 hours (which is the normal sort of timescale). Evidently, they do not want to have too many unresolved complaints at the Better Business Bureau. The BBB branch handling this company is in Richmond, VA. The magazinecity company has the lowest possible rating from BBB and you can see their report at http://richmond.bbb.org/WWWRoot/Report.aspx?sit.... I would advise anyone who has difficulties with them to try a complaint through BBB.

I ordered Viz magazine on Feb 29, 2008 and to date the person it was for has not received the magazine. Several emails and calls got us nowhere. On Nov. 20,2008 I called and the woman said a credit would appear on my card but to date it has not. I also emailed BBB and they really did not respond at all.

Have you tried formally registering a complaint with BBB? You can do it at https://odr.bbb.org/odrweb/public/GetStarted.aspx

Magazinecity.com is a scam! Please spread the word. I had a similar experience. I ordered on October 12th, 2008. My confirmation email states the magazine should arrive in 6-8 weeks (10-12 if bi-monthly or quarterly magazine). It has been 14 weeks and still it hasn't arrived. I called them twice. They said it will come at the end of February (4 months later). I don't believe it. They won't connect me to a supervisor. They say she is on the phone. I told them I would wait but they transferred me against my consent to the supervisor's voice mail. Supposedly, this is her direct line 434-817-1800 x216. I've left voice messages but she won't call back.
I found out from the Richmond Virginia Better Business Bureau that the company has received a grade of "F" due to various issues:
    * Number of complaints filed against business
    * Number of complaints filed against business that were not resolved
    * Number of serious complaints filed against business
    See this site: http://richmond.bbb.org/WWWRoot/Report.aspx?sit...

Also, there is a lot of complaints against Magazinecity.com found here:
    http://www.complaintsboard.com/complaints/magaz...

The more posts we can place on the Internet the better! We need to get the natural search results in Google to show that Magazinecity.com is a scam! Don't buy from them!

I am rapidly coming to the conclusion that good discounts online from unknown brands CANNOT be trusted. I am not having a go at new entrants but simply saying that online selling without significant branding presence is being totally discredited by those who exploit the willingness of consumers to 'give it a try'.

I ordered a Rolling Stone subscription a few years ago from them which started about 2 months later. I ordered another one in Aug. 08 and it never came. I have sent them numerous msgs also to which I was told "just wait a little longer". I just called them and waited about 10 mins on the phone only to get a msg that said to call back during regular business hours and hung up on. Nice. Shame on you magazine city. I am going to submit a complaint to the better business bureau also.

eek! thanks for the heads up!
  • Toronto SEO · 10 months ago
Damn that sucks, you should report them to the better business bureau. How much was the subscription anyway?
  • Marcy · 10 months ago
I wish I had done some research before ordering through them. I ordered a magazine through magazinecity.com over 10 months ago, and have gotten nothing but the run-around. So sucky. Will be contacting the BBB to report them.

I've had the same problem. I posted my order in Dec. 08 and never got anything. They took me for $200. No replies to my emails, nobody picks up the phone. Who do I talk to about this? Isn't this mail fraud? Please email me at karimmarouf@yahoo.com

I have a personal experience regarding this fraud, as one of my client placed an order on march 2008 and never got any response from them. If anyone has such a similar experience with magazinecity, you can launch a complaint at Better Business Bureau (BBB)
This is seriously ridiculous. This not only me who is complaining, there are thousands of people who have been scammed. Beaware of magazinecity subscription, you may loose money.

Hi, I ordered for my dad's xmas present (2008) a subscription to Home Theatre, they were very quick to deduct money from my account - have yet to see magazine. I only googled tonight (magazinecity.com) and looks like I should have 'sucker' tattooed across my forehead. After lots of emails to their 'contact us' page, I am really p**sed off. Guess Dad won't be getting his magazines.

I do not know if magazine city is a fraud or not, but make sure to take a look at all of their EXTRA charges before making a purchase with them.
  • nvaleo · 6 months ago
good thing they had put an action to their mistake, why do some companies always have excuses for their mistake. Can't they promise things that they can do.
  • electro sex · 6 months ago
That's unfair. You deserve a refund!

I worked for magazinecity.com. They are not a complete fraud, but do not buy magazines from them. I worked there Jan - Aug of 2008.. there were orders from late 2006 and early 2007 that had not even been sent to the publisher. They do not have nearly enough customer service representatives and all they can do is lie to you and tell you it will be there the following month, an exception for the orders that really did make it to the publisher. They say to allow 30-45 business days for your refund, and then call back if you have not gotten. Chances are you will not have gotten it, the only thing you can do is constantly call after the 45 business days is up and breathe down their necks until they finally realize your not giving up and you should see the refund in 10-12 days. The owner(s) are hustband and wire Rus Halley and Anne-Marie Halley.. she also goes by Anne Marie Faris. The next in charge is Carol Powell. They can be reached at the following extensions: Carol- 434-817-1800 ext 208. Rus- 434-817-1800 ext 201. Anne Marie - 434-817-1800 ext 204
